Back to School Breakfast

Writer's picture: Sam BrownSam Brown

Let me start this post by saying, is a Back to School Breakfast completely unnecessary and absolutely extra. Yes, yes it is. But, my guess is that if you're looking at this blog post you are interested because you're also like me and maybe you're also absolutely extra. So, if that's why you're here, HELLO! If you're here and you're wondering if you're a good mom if you don't do a "Back to School Breakfast," the answer is YES, YOU ARE A GREAT MOM and a silly little breakfast won't change that!

If you're interested in doing one, let's take a peek into the past from our Back to School Breakfasts.....

How to Plan and Execute a Back to School Breakfast--

  1. Hype up the Day - Let your kids know the night before (or whenever you're ready) that school is starting soon. The first year I surprised my boys and told them we were going to do something special for the first day of school, and hence the Back to School Breakfast was born. This year, my boys remembered, unprompted, on their own that since school was starting...."ARE WE DOING A SCHOOL BREAKFAST, MOMMY?!?!

  2. Use supplies you HAVE ON HAND - Guys, literally, the only thing I bought out of what we already owned for both years was the red paper plates. I had everything else, or printed a quick thing off the internet for decoration.

  3. Make the breakfast fun, but simple - Don't go crazy, we still have to teach the people..... LOL! I try to have a "treat" or "fun type" item, paired with something that's actually going to hold them over, like yogurt, bacon, eggs, etc. Get those bellies happy and full for the first day!

YEAR 1:

Decorations: Notebook paper taped together as a table runner,, sprinkled with alphabet mini erasers from target, printed and cut out some paper apple clipart I found on Google. Added a Book to the center, and added two little buckets of crayons to each side. For the table places, I printed off a pencil, wrote their name, and took a red plate and added a stem and green leaf from construction paper. I also printed out a composition book clipart to put under their plates.

Breakfast: I made our kid's favorite, Cinnamon Roll Waffles with yogurt and bacon!

YEAR 2:

Decorations: Green paper taped together (it's all I had, LOL) as a table runner, sprinkled with alphabet letters from our favorite wooden puzzle. Added a cutting board/tray to the middle, our favorite chalkboards from Chalk Full of Design, and added a jar of pencils and some crayon tops we got from Wendy's Kid Meals this summer, LOL! For the table places, I just kept on brand with the red plate and added a stem and green leaf from construction paper.

Breakfast: Mini donuts I found in the bakery section at WalMart, bacon and eggs.

I'll use this post in the future years to document our fun little tradition! If you give this one a try, I'd love to see your Back to School Breakfast! Tag me on Instagram @ourblessedhomeschool
